What Is a Fire-Rated Ceiling?

A fire-rated ceiling is a complete construction designed and tested to provide fire resistance for a specified period. Depending on the system and project requirements, this may include protection against fire passing through the ceiling and protection for the floor or structural elements above.
The required performance can vary between projects. Fire resistance periods may include 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes where supported by an appropriate tested or assessed system.
A fire-rated ceiling is more than fire-resistant plasterboard alone. Its performance depends on the full system, including:
